ENGL 283: Verse portfolio

ENGL 283 stood out as the first time I studied poetry composition formally, and it stretched my understanding and my creative output in major ways. The format of the class was broken down into weekly prompts for guided exercises, and at the end we compiled and revised our best work. Many of the exercises were challenging and I wasn’t completely thrilled with everything I produced, but it paid off in week 7, when I wrote my favorite poem ever! The editing process for the finished portfolio was also very intensive, and I appreciated the opportunity to move beyond the intuitive/”guess and check” method of writing that I had been using up to this point, and learn more about the formal skills of the craft.
