Pipeline tutoring

2019

(Click the picture to be taken to my Literacy Arts Alternative Spring Break reflection!)

At Aki Kurose Middle School and then Seattle World School, I spent time helping out in a classroom and providing assistance with homework for older kids. I felt like this was a good way to use the tutoring experience I’d gained in high school as a form of service, and I also wanted to get some use out of the Spanish I’d learned in high school and was worried I’d forget. It turned out to be really useful when I went on the Pipeline project’s Literacy Arts alternative spring break trip my freshman year and was assigned to Mattawa, a town with a high Spanish-speaking population. My experience on the ASB trip was so positive that it led me to sign up for these tutoring positions this year, and I came to the Seattle World School position via an EDUC seminar on teaching across cultures. It was really fulfilling to work with my students and help them with projects as fun and exciting as their own string-bound picture books (3rd graders on ASB) and as frustrating as college application essays (high school seniors at Seattle World School), and it provided me with more of a glimpse into the structure and daily life of teaching as a career.
